Microsoft features Vembu as ‘Startup of the Day’ in Microsoft Startup Zone
More excitement rolls in as Microsoft BizSpark featured ‘Vembu’ as their ‘Startup of the Day’ on its website today. As you might recall from my previous blog that Microsoft handpicked Vembu Technologies as one of the most promising 45 startup firms around 10 countries for the new ‘BizSpark One’ program and Vembu is the first and only firm from India to be selected for that Program.

In response to our competitor’s willingness to stop the blog war, we want to reiterate that as a company we do not like to indulge in blog wars or any unwarranted mudslinging. We were just provoked by RBS’s constant focus in attacking our product and company without full understanding of what we are. We apologize if we hurt anyone personally in this avoidable blog war.

On Paternity Claims and Sundry Other Rants…
I ran into an especially long-winded post in a competitor’s blog – it is very confused even by the standards of someone who claims paternity for the ‘online backup industry’. Initially, I thought it was just the phrase ‘online-backup’, but later it transpired that it was the whole industry for which parentage was being claimed. Much the same thing happened with me when one day in 1993, I asked my friend near the refrigerator, ‘(We) Got Milk?’ and thereby INVENTED the phrase ‘Got Milk?’. AND pasteurization. There’s a competitor of ours called Axxxx
They have a forum (if you hadn’t guessed already, you know who they are now)
One of the key rules on their forum is ‘no names of competitors’. So you’ll find references to us as Vxxxx. For example (from their forum): My reseller is close to dropping our service and switch to a vxxxx based solution because of these kinds of glitches. Please help.

Will the real data please stand up? A look at deduplication in the online backup world
Talk about data deduplication (in the backup and archiving domain) seems to be gaining a fair amount of momentum in the last few years! Most enterprise backup software vendors like Symantec (Veritas), EMC (Avamar) etc. support deduplication in some form or the other – some do deduplication in the source system (that is being backed up) and others do deduplication at the target (backup/storage server). There are also pure “deduplication based storage hardware vendors” like Data Domain who have gained considerable traction in the enterprise.
