VEMBU BLOG
SP Edition
Where does Vembu Home fit…in the grand scheme of things?

We’ve been in business since 2004. Our Service Provider Edition has been available since early 2006.
Our flagship product, StoreGrid runs on over 100,000 computers, and is ‘under the hood’ of about 1,500 service providers across the globe.
StoreGrid is also ‘under the hood’ of our new Vembu Home service.
So, why are we launching our own service?
Are we (shudder) planning on competing with our own service providers? Are we changing our business model?
No, and no.
Hopefully, the following points will place things in perspective…
- We’ve been squarely focused on ‘business backups’ so far. This focus will continue

New Partner Zone look – inspired by Bing
Over 1,300 online backup service providers use our partner zone. If you’re one of them and have been to the partner zone lately, you probably noticed that it looks different.
If you like the new look, remember to thank Bing!
One of the interesting things that’s helping endear Bing to its users is their interesting library of background images. Take a look – most of those pics are amazing (hint: there’s a control at the bottom right that lets you see other pictures) !
Bing’s homepage design is the polar opposite of Google’s spartan approach to … Read the rest

Vembu Technologies partners with Caringo
We’ve been talking to the folks at Caringo for some time now, and have been playing around with each other’s products at our respective labs. We’re now glad to ‘formally’ announce our alliance! A detailed press release can viewed here and a ‘solution page’ explaining the joint solution in more detail is available here.
If you’re short on time, here’s a summary:
You can now store your (backed up) data in your own Cloud or clustered storage using Caringo CAStor. With the help of CAStor you can convert any in house x86 hardware to a clustered storage device. … Read the rest

How to Win with StoreGrid and the Amazon Cloud!
Vembu StoreGrid announces the production release of StoreGrid Cloud AMI, a virtual appliance for backing up to StoreGrid running on the Amazon Web Services (EC2 and S3).
Simply put, this means that you can start or expand your online backup business with StoreGrid running on the Amazon Cloud computing service (EC2) and store backup data on the Amazon Cloud storage service (S3).
Unlike other backup players that use Cloud services primarily for storage of the backup data, StoreGrid leverages the computing cloud offering of Amazon (EC2) along with the storage service (S3) to create a powerful backup platform for … Read the rest

HP shutters its Upline online data backup service – Why commoditized online backup service is not a sustainable business
I was contacted by ChannelWeb to comment on HP’s decision to shutter their Upline online data backup business. The gist of what I commented was carried in the article “HP To Shutter Upline Online Storage Backup Service” by ChannelWeb’s Senior Editor Joseph F. Kovar. I felt it’s a good idea to post here my full comments along with my view about commodity online backup services like Carbonite and EMC’s Mozy.
Hope these are not perceived as just wishful thinking on my part. My comments are based on our experience supporting more than 1000 partners offering backup services … Read the rest

Will the real data please stand up? A look at deduplication in the online backup world
Talk about data deduplication (in the backup and archiving domain) seems to be gaining a fair amount of momentum in the last few years! Most enterprise backup software vendors like Symantec (Veritas), EMC (Avamar) etc. support deduplication in some form or the other – some do deduplication in the source system (that is being backed up) and others do deduplication at the target (backup/storage server). There are also pure “deduplication based storage hardware vendors” like Data Domain who have gained considerable traction in the enterprise.
I am actually quite surprised by the hype around deduplication and the adoption it … Read the rest

Synthetic Full Backup in the online backup world – Are we inviting trouble?
We have been noticing an increase in the number of ‘prospective partners’ asking if StoreGrid supports the synthetic full backup feature. StoreGrid does not yet support this feature as we have always given a low priority to this feature in the past. But now that it is being frequently asked for, we have started implementing it and hope to have this feature in the next few months. Though we would always like to give our partners as much choice and flexibility while using StoreGrid for their online backup services business, this particular feature has been haunting me for sometime. I … Read the rest

Interview by BackupAnyTime
I was interviewed by John O’Neill of Ireland based online backup service provider BackuupAnyTime back in August, 2008. This was part of a series of interviews John was doing with executives from the data backup industry. One of our customers happened to read it recently and he wrote us saying it may be a good idea to post my interview in our blog or at least have a post with a link to that interview. He felt the views I expressed in the interview are quite relevant to our customer and partner base. So here is the link to the … Read the rest

Google will abandon ‘pure SaaS’ and take the ‘software plus services’ route – courtesy Microsoft
So the inevitable is happening. At last, Google seems to be coming around to Microsoft’s software plus services strategy. The news that Google is opening up Google Apps for resellers is the first step in this direction. Pure SaaS sold directly to end customers would only go some distance. There are hundreds of thousands of SMBs out there who prefer to outsource their IT to a local IT Solution provider or a managed service provider (MSP). The only way to reach that segment of the SMB is through these IT solution providers. It was hence inevitable that Google ca… Read the rest

Why we are impressed with EMC
I should say I am seriously impressed with EMC. I am talking about their announcement of a new subsidiary called Decho, which combines the two acquisitions they had made in the last one year: the online backup services startup, Mozy, and the Personal
Information Management startup, Pi Corp. When EMC acquired Mozy I had thought EMC would use Mozy’s technology to come up with some cloud storage initiative for the enterprise and the mid-market segment. I also felt that would take away Mozy’s focus on consumer and small and medium business segment. Of course, it was probably wishful thinking … Read the rest
