Vembu @ HostingCon2010

We are at the HostingCon 2010 in Austin, Texas and the atmosphere here is fantastic. We are excited about showing off the latest in Vembu StoreGrid for service providers.

Check out our booth #326, we’ll be showing off the latest in our product for managed hosting providers. A very good reason to do this is because Jay, our VP of Storage Services will be around to take questions on online backups and the latest in storage technology.

1) In the ‘latest’ category, the Flex Light interface for desktops and laptops is currently in beta and is soon to be released … Read the rest

A ‘Healthy’ Adoption of Cloud based Social Networks

My friend once told me about this doctor he knew.  Back in the 1980s, this doc noticed that many of his patients could do with some advice on easily preventable ailments – which typically cost them a lost day of work at the farm and a visit to the doctor.   He compiled a list of rural visitors to his clinic over the years and started mailing them inexpensive postcards with printed health messages aimed at preventing them ever having to visit him (in effect).  The audacity of this plan was matched only by its simplicity and his practice flourished with … Read the rest

Dame Luck & The 10,000-hour Road to Success

Considering humanity’s obsession with ‘self-development’/’How to be successful’ books and the yards and yards of shelf space that they occupy on our book stores, any attempt to dissect the clichéd ‘roads to success’ is definitely worthwhile.

Malcolm Gladwell’s famous 10,000-hour rule has caught the fancy of a lot of people.   The book attempts to question our definition of ‘success’ and to find out a pattern behind ‘outliers’.  Gladwell goes to explain the careers of really successful people – accomplished and extraordinary persons who are outside of ordinary experience.

A recent post by Joe Panettieri from MSPMentor summarizes this book … Read the rest

Storage on a Budget for MSPs!

Offsite backup storage solutions at commodity hardware prices

Folks in the UK are building storage boxes that could house up to petabytes of data using commodity hardware.  Managed Service Providers can benefit from this cost-effective storage solution for their StoreGrid Backup or Replication servers.

This initially started as an effort by an online backup service provider to build cheap cloud storage for its own storage needs (thanks to them for sharing the design for those who wish to build their storage cost-effectively!).   This has triggered a few hardware architects in the UK to explore building cheap storage options for service … Read the rest

On Paternity Claims and Sundry Other Rants…

I ran into an especially long-winded post in a competitor’s blog – it is very confused even by the standards of someone who claims paternity for the ‘online backup industry’.   Initially, I thought it was just the phrase ‘online-backup’, but later it transpired that it was the whole industry for which parentage was being claimed.   Much the same thing happened with me when one day in 1993, I asked my friend near the refrigerator, ‘(We) Got Milk?’ and thereby INVENTED the phrase ‘Got Milk?’.  AND pasteurization.  AND the whole dairy industry.  Giggle.

I wouldn’t have written this post hadn’t it … Read the rest

The Cloud: Substance wins over Form

The Cloud has garnered quite a bit of media storm since its advent with big names like Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Sun throwing in their hats in the ring.   Not to mention the controversy kicked up by McKinsey’s uncharitable comments on the Cloud.

We have always believed that the Cloud would be a valuable addition to an MSP’s arsenal – and we went about supporting Amazon Cloud services precisely because of that.  This enabled our partners to either operate their entire backup service out of Amazon’s EC2/S3 services or simply leverage S3 storage service for the offsite replication.  And we … Read the rest

How to Win with StoreGrid and the Amazon Cloud!

Vembu StoreGrid announces the production release of StoreGrid Cloud AMI, a virtual appliance for backing up to StoreGrid running on the Amazon Web Services (EC2 and S3).

Simply put, this means that you can start or expand your online backup business with StoreGrid running on the Amazon Cloud computing service (EC2) and store backup data on the Amazon Cloud storage service (S3).

Unlike other backup players that use Cloud services primarily for storage of the backup data, StoreGrid leverages the computing cloud offering of Amazon (EC2) along with the storage service (S3) to create a powerful backup platform for … Read the rest
