Synthetic Full Backup in the online backup world – Are we inviting trouble?

We have been noticing an increase in the number of ‘prospective partners’ asking if StoreGrid supports the synthetic full backup feature. StoreGrid does not yet support this feature as we have always given a low priority to this feature in the past. But now that it is being frequently asked for, we have started implementing it and hope to have this feature in the next few months. Though we would always like to give our partners as much choice and flexibility while using StoreGrid for their online backup services business, this particular feature has been haunting me for sometime. I … Read the rest

Interview by BackupAnyTime

I was interviewed by John O’Neill of Ireland based online backup service provider BackuupAnyTime back in August, 2008. This was part of a series of interviews John was doing with executives from the data backup industry. One of our customers happened to read it recently and he wrote us saying it may be a good idea to post my interview in our blog or at least have a post with a link to that interview. He felt the views I expressed in the interview are quite relevant to our customer and partner base. So here is the link to the … Read the rest

Google will abandon ‘pure SaaS’ and take the ‘software plus services’ route – courtesy Microsoft

So the inevitable is happening. At last, Google seems to be coming around to Microsoft’s software plus services strategy. The news that Google is opening up Google Apps for resellers is the first step in this direction. Pure SaaS sold directly to end customers would only go some distance. There are hundreds of thousands of SMBs out there who prefer to outsource their IT to a local IT Solution provider or a managed service provider (MSP). The only way to reach that segment of the SMB is through these IT solution providers. It was hence inevitable that Google caRead the rest

Government appointed “crumbs pickers” take charge at Satyam Computers! Why “in the best interests” actions are a dangerous thing?

Note to our customers and partners: Before I get bashed up by some of our customers or partners (who use our product, Vembu StoreGrid, for their online/onsite backups) who are reading this blog to learn more about our company, our product, the online backup or the SaaS/MSP industry, I promise that the next two posts of mine will be related to our business. Please bear with me for letting out my frustrations in this blog. I am deeply passionate about some of these topics – especially how more and more government intervention in our lives is the root … Read the rest

Crooks are taking over this world; How long do we just settle for the crumbs?

I feel more and more agitated and restless nowadays. The expose of so many of the corporate scams that have been going on for so long is proving my intuitions right – that the current system of governance (the skewed free market system with so called government controlled regulatory authorities) in place across the world breed crooks more often than not. I am not at all happy about the situation though it sometimes feels good that I have personally always stayed away from investing in stock markets as I have always felt uncomfortable and did not believe in the hype and … Read the rest

A tale of two (data) disasters

If you had a blog on Journalspace but rarely updated it, now’s the time to pat yourself on the back!

Down the Drain

Following a data debacle, the blogging platform ceases to exist and the domain name is now up for sale. All this unfolded over the last 2 weeks when the ‘main database’ that held all key information (including the labor of love of many bloggers) was wiped out after it was unrecoverably written over – ostensibly by a disgruntled IT administrator. Techcrunch has the details.

Oh, and they hadn’t backed up their main (SQL Server) database – and they’ve been … Read the rest
